February
News!
February is here and a busy time of the year in 4K with the
celebration of Ground Hog Day, President’s Day and Valentines Day! A perfect
time to learn about citizenship, community helpers and friendship!
In
February, we will begin a social studies and math unit related to
community helpers, the responsibility and characteristics of good leadership,
number relationships, sorting and communicating to others through the written
word. Our drama center will have our own post office, mailboxes and card-making
center all this in addition to our regular writing, reading, block, art and
math centers! For our centers this month we could use extra cards, envelopes,
stickers, stamps, stamp pads, office stamps, postal supplies, scented markers,
community toys for the block center like a hospital, garage, fire station, or
airport! Thanks!
During the month of February I would also like to invite all of
our parents and families who work in a community helper profession to come in
and share with our 4K class what they do to help our community! We are very
flexible and would welcome you at any time… just drop me a note, email or leave
me a message on my voice mail and we’ll work something out!
Valentines’
Day Celebration
Anytime after Monday, February 3th your
child may bring in Valentines (homemade or
store brought) addressed to each of their classmates (a letter was sent
home a week ago with a student list).
Please
make sure that all Valentines are signed by
your child, also beginning with
a capital letter, followed by lower case letters. This is a great way for them
to practice correctly writing their name, just please be sure that they are not
writing their name on all their Valentines at one time…spread it out so they
don’t get too tired or bored with it! Have fun…Thank you!
We will have a special Valentine celebration on February 13th!
Library
Books
Speaking of volunteers! We could also use some more readers for
our Monday library time. Please let me know via email or call. I also want to
remind you that library books should be read a couple of times during the week
and returned only on Tuesdays. I see some books in the backpacks all week and
when I ask if some one read the book to my friends they say no! Please read the
books that your child has picked out. J
Also don’t forget to read our Daily News (coming home this Friday!) with your
child!
Gym
Day is…Fridays!
Parents some children come to school in boots without shoes to
wear and some students do not have proper shoes for gym and need to sit out
instead of having valuable physical activity. Please make sure that on a daily
basis children have proper shoes to wear in the classroom and most importantly
gym shoes on Fridays!
*** If anyone has extra four year old sized tennis shoes they
would like to donate in order to keep some extra pairs on hand, for those who
forget they would be much appreciated. I sanitize them after each use. J
Letter
Friends
Hopefully you have heard positive things about our NEW letter
people! During the month of February we will meet some new Letter People. This month we will meet new letter friends:
Ms. K is a soccer
kicking champion with a “kaboom” kick!
Her picture is even on a box of cereal called Kaboom Cereal! She also gets a kick out of being kind. Everyone knows she is very kind. We’ll continue talking about kindness and
sharing and thankfulness. Ms. K is so
kind she helped Mr. B learn how to slide without going “ker-thump” at the
bottom. She has a hidden lowercase k on each cuff on her wrist.
Then
along will come Ms. W. She watches weather from the window
in our classroom! She loves words so much that she has a lot of
letters on her clothes and they all make up words! (Note: When reading a book, point out special words and then tell your child that words are made out of letters! Ta-da!)
Field
Trip
Our next field trip will take place on Tuesday, March 4th! We
will be going to see the play Anatole put on by First Stage Children’s Theater.
Permission slips will be forthcoming so please watch for them!
Families
As always we have lots to do in 4K and it would not be possible without your help, interest and enthusiasm …so thank you for being good friends to our 4K program at Mitchell and for all you do to reinforce and support the work I am doing at school at home on a daily basis! There is so much to learn in 4k and we are making good progress!
